Yes – before you go completely bonkers on me, this track is about the Scottish fight against tyranny, their rights to live free, and the need to rise as one to protect the future and their rights. It was a struggle that started in 1296 and propelled Wallace into a significant patriot when they revolted in 1297, fighting hard against the English invasion.
Is it a tribute to Wallace who fought until the end and became an icon for the Scottish?
I would argue that many of the struggles are real today, in many parts of the World, and our Governments are starting to assert too much control over the people. We are no longer free, and our politicians (both sides of the aisle) are making a mockery of the people in many countries.
The lyrics from The Clansman are powerful and is one of Iron Maiden’s great hits. I had the privilege of seeing them in concert in Brooklyn in 2019, which was a tremendous experience. The arena erupted as the easily identifiable cords started this track.
It's a time wrought with fear It's a land wrought with change Ancestors could hear what is happening now They would turn in their graves They would all be ashamed The land of the free
Ahead of Thanksgiving, amid all the political clown shows (shitshow), let’s also assess where our governments are trying to take us and how they are restricting our lives more and more. I’m not saying that a pandemic is not serious, but we cannot shut down all – this financial impact will be unbearable, and it is putting more people into debt and poverty.
Enough politics. Let’s enjoy Iron Maiden’s tribute to Wallace.
Listen to the lyrics, my fellow patriots!
Just in case the link from Brooklyn concert doesn’t work, here’s another version.
